Ad Number:1755997
Date Placed:01/16/26
Name:David R PENNES
Phone Number:email only
Callsign:WA3LKN
Category:MISC
Heading:1886 'Steiner' Telegraph Key For Repair
Ad Message:$75 + $3 Shipping.
This item is a so-called ‘Steiner’ key made by Western Electric that needs a new wafer spring, and a piece of spring steel of about the correct specs is included. All other parts of the key are present and accounted for.
This is a fairly rare key.
This would be a straightforward repair for someone handy with metalworking or who has access to a machine shop. The spring is sandwiched between the steel lever and the top piece and is held in place by rivets. Screws rather than rivets would be an acceptable repair since they’re out of sight on the undersurface of the lever.
A few straight keys in the 1870s and 1880s used spring steel rather than the more common hairpin and conical springs, and it didn’t work out so well then, or in the 1960s-1970s either, as some owners of Brown Brothers equipment will undoubtedly testify.
This key is the ‘legless’ version of the key shown in the 1886 patent description.

Your Response to this Ad:

Due to the amount of non-ham scammers trying to respond to the ads, I am now asking a simple question that ham operators should easily be able to answer, but scammers may not know the answer: What is the number that hams use to represent the phrase "Best Regards"? This number is typically transmitted by hams at the end of a QSO.
Best Regards:
